How do I reset my DNS settings?

If you have internet connectivity but find yourself unable to browse any websites, it is likely due to an incorrect DNS configuration. This can happen for several reasons, but one of the most common reasons is if you're using a VPN client with DNS leak protection that has crashed, DNScrypt, or some other form of DNS leak protection.

The following instructions can help you rectify the issue.

Windows 7

  1. Open the Start menu and click on Control panel
  2. Click on Network and Sharing center
  3. Click on Local area connection under Active Networks. A new window should pop up in which you can see your current connection status
  4. Click on the Properties button
  5. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) in the displayed list. Once selected, click the Properties button
  6. Select Obtain IP address automatically as well as Obtain DNS Server Automatically. With these checked you will receive your IP configurations automatically from the router
  7. Click OK and close all the windows

Windows 8

  1. Select the Desktop option in the Start menu to go to your desktop
  2. From the desktop, right click on the Network icon in the system tray (usually in the lower-right corner) and select the option Open Network and Sharing Center
  3. Click on your active connection, usually "Ethernet", "Local area connection" or "Wi-Fi"
  4. Click on the Properties button.
  5. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) in the displayed list. Once selected, click the Properties button
  6. Select Obtain IP address automatically as well as Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
  7. Click OK and close all the windows

Windows 10

  1. Right click on the start menu button (usually located lower left of your screen)
  2. Click on Network Connections
  3. Click on Change Adapter Options under Change your network settings
  4. Right click on your active connection, usually "Ethernet","Local Area Connection" or "Wi-Fi"
  5. Select Properties
  6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) in the displayed list. Once selected, click the Properties button
  7. Select Obtain IP address automatically as well as Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
  8. Click OK and close all the windows

MacOS / OS X

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Choose the Network
  3. Select whether you're connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the left side
  4. Click on Advanced
  5. Choose the DNS tab at the top of the screen
  6. Remove the set DNS addresses
  7. Click on the OK button
  8. Click on Apply
