I am experiencing low speeds when I am connected to OVPN. Is there anything I can do fix this?

Before troubleshooting, try connecting through TCP 443, as this can solve issues with low Internet speed in some situations.

This article is dedicated to explaining what you can do if you are experiencing low Internet speed when connected to OVPN.

Which IP-adresser should I use?

Use the IP-address for the server hall you have speed problems for. If you're in Sweden and have problem with the Swedish servers, use the IP-address for Malmö and Stockholm. If you're in the United States or Canada, use the IP-address for the Toronto data center. Remember to use the corresponding test file for the data center you choose, otherwise the test might show incorrect results. Do try and perform a performance test to at least two or three different servers for the best result.

Windows

  1. To get a correct picture of you actual Internet speed, we are going to use an application called wget. Download wget for Windows.
  2. Go through the installation process for wget. Write down the folder you install it in. By default, it’s usually set to C:\Program Files (x86)\GnuWin32\.
  3. If you are connected to OVP, please disconnect.
  4. Open the command prompt.
  5. Run "C:\Program Files (x86)\GnuWin32\bin\wget.exe" [Test file for server hall]
  6. When the command prompt is done, make a screen dump of the window and name the file “Ordinary speedtest”.
  7. Run tracert [IP-address for data center]
  8. When the command prompt is done, make a screen dump of the window and name the file “Traceroute 1”.
  9. Run: tracert [IP-address for data center]
  10. When the command prompt is done, make a screen dump of the window and name the file “Traceroute 2”.
  11. Run: tracert [IP-address for data center]
  12. When the command prompt is done, make a screen dump of the window and name the file “Traceroute 3”.
  13. Now connect to OVPN.
  14. Run: "C:\Program Files (x86)\GnuWin32\bin\wget.exe" [Test file for data center]
  15. When the command prompt is done, make a screen dump of the window and name the file “VPN speedtest”.
  16. Create an archive for all the screen dumps.
  17. Upload the archive to file.io, and contact us. Include the link to the archive in your contact form.

OS X/Linux/Unix

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. If you are connected to OVPN, please disconnect.
  3. Run: curl [Test file for server hall] -O /dev/null.
  4. When the command has completed successfully, make a screen dump of the results. Name the file “Ordinary speedtest”.
  5. Run: traceroute [IP-address for data center]
  6. When the command has completed successfully, make a screen dump of the results. Name the file “Traceroute 1”.
  7. Run: traceroute [IP-address for data center]
  8. When the command has completed successfully, make a screen dump of the results. Name the file “Traceroute 2”.
  9. Run: traceroute [IP-address for data center]
  10. When the command has completed successfully, make a screen dump of the results. Name the file “Traceroute 3”.
  11. Connect to OVPN.
  12. Run: curl [Test file for data center] -O /dev/null
  13. When the command has completed successfully, make a scree dump of the result. Name the file “VPN speedtest”.
  14. Make an archive of all the screen dumps.
  15. Upload the archive to file.io, and contact us. Include the link to the archive in your contact form.
